NRA Basic Pistol Shooting Course

SYNOPSIS: A team of NRA Certified Firearms Instructors will provide the NRA Basic Pistol Shooting course.  The 10-hour course deals with the basic knowledge, skills, and attitudes necessary for owning and using a pistol safely.  The fee covers the NRA "The Basic of Pistol Shooting" textbook; NRA Safety Rules pamphlet; eye and ear protection (the students can keep the previous items); one-year Liberty NRA membership (if desired), one-year membership to Southern Minnesota Sportsman's Club for student, spouse, and child under 18 years; lunch, coffee and rolls; firearms; ammunition; firearms cleaning supplies; and NRA Course Completion Certificate.  Follow-on and support is available after taking the course covering:

Pistol Knowledge and Safe Gun Handling.  Principal parts of a pistol and types of actions will be identified and their functions demonstrated.   NRA rules for safe gun handling will be explained, applied and adopted through the class for future use when around or using handguns.   There will be a safe pistol handling practical exercise.

Ammunition Knowledge and Fundamentals of Pistol Shooting.   The different components of a pistol cartridge and the firing  equence will be explained.  The proper store of ammunition will be presented.  The major types of cartridge malfunctions will be identified.  The fundamentals of pistol shooting will be demonstrated.

Two-Handed and One-Handed Standing Shooting Positions.  The knowledge, skills and attitude necessary to safely shoot a handgun from the two-handed and one-handed standing shooting positions will be demonstrated.  Properly scoring a pistol target will be covered.  Basic guidelines for purchasing a pistol will be available.

Firing the First Shots.  Demonstrate the knowledge, skills, and attitude necessary to shoot a pistol safely on the range.  Materials needed to clean a pistol will be identified.  A practice exercise cleaning a pistol safely will be held.

Pistol Sports and Activities.  Identify several ways to pursue pistol shooting activities after the course.  Safely pursue and enjoy pistol shooting activities to the best of their ability.
