Gun safety education is working to save lives.  With a firearm present in about half of all American households, a tremendous opportunity exists to teach children a lifesaving message  The Eddie Eagle Gun Safety Program was developed in 1988 to teach children pre-kindergarten through sixth grade what to do should they come upon an unsecured firearm.  Eddie Eagle, the program mascot, serves as a positive role model to millions of children each year teaching a simple, yet powerful, safety message:

If you see a gun:  STOP!  Don't Touch.  Leave the Area.  Tell an Adult.

The Eddie Eagle Gun Safety Program is a unique accident prevention program that helps children learn that guns are not toys.  The program makes no value judgement about whether guns are good or bad, but teaches safe behavior.  It was developed with the help of school administrators, principals, reading specialists, pschologists, law enforcement agents and urban housing officials.  Although parents have the primary responsibility for teaching their children safe behavior, educators, law enforcement officers, and youth leaders can play a vital role in safety education.  Program materials, available in English and Spanish, are designed for three learning levels.  Each level includes instructor guides, student activity books, posters, stickers and an animated video.

One of the most important issues on every Amercian's mind is child safety.  That is why the NRA places such a high priority on the education of our youth, and reaching children with The Eddie Eagle Gun Safety Program is critical.  Volunteers, at a grassroots level, are at the core of this program's success and critical to its future.  Together, we can help give children the kowledge they need to avoid accidents and prevent tragedy.
