NRA Basic Rifle Shooting Course

SYNOPSIS: A team of NRA Certified Firearms Instructors will provide the NRA Basic Rifle Shooting course.  The 14-hour course deals with the basic knowledge, skills, and attitudes necessary for the safe use of a rifle in target shooting.   The fee covers the NRA "The Basic of Rifle  Shooting" textbook; NRA Safety Rules pamphlet; eye and ear protection (the students can keep the previous items); one-year membership to Southern Minnesota Sportsman's Club for student, spouse, and child under 18 years; lunch, coffee and rolls; firearms; ammunition; firearms cleaning supplies; and NRA Course Completion Certificate.  Follow-on and support is available after taking the course covering:

Rifle Knowledge and Safe Gun Handling.  Principal parts of a rifle, action types, and how they function will be demonstrated.   NRA rules for safe gun handling will be explained, applied and adopted through the class for future use when around or using rifles.   Handling rifles in a safe manner will be demonstrated.

Ammunition Knowledge and Fundamentals of Rifle Shooting.   The different components of a rifle  cartridge and their intended use will be explained.  A demonstration to ensure the ammunition is correct for the rifle will be held.  The five fundamentals of shooting a rifle will be identified and demonstrated.  The NRA Basic Rifle Qualification Program will be explained.

Firing the First Shots.  The knowledge, skills and attitude necessary to safely shoot a rifle on the range will be demonstrated.  Students will shoot at a target using the five fundamentals of rifle shooting.  A practical exercise on safe cleaning a rifle with identified materials will be held.   Pro-Marksman Qualification Award will be explained.

Standing Rifle Shooting Positions.  Demonstrate the knowledge, skills, and attitude necessary to safely shoot a rifle from a standing position.   The Marksman Qualification Award will be explained.

Prone and Kneeling Rifle Shooting Positions.  Demonstrate the knowledge, skill, and attitude necessary to safely shoot a rifle from the prone and kneeling positions.  The Marksman Qualification Award will be explained.

Sitting Rifle Shooting Position and Review of Positions.  Demonstrate the knowledge, skill, and attitude necessary to safely shoot a rifle from the sitting position.  The Marksman Qualification Award will be explained.

Rifle Sports and Activities.  Identify several ways to pursue rifle shooting activities after the course.  Criteria for selecting a rifle will be identified.  Identify various shooting organizations and how to become involved with them.  Successfully pass the NRA Basic Rifle Marksmanship Course Examination.  Safely pursue and enjoy rifle shooting activities to the best to their abilities.
