NRA Basic Shotgun Shooting Course

SYNOPSIS: A team of NRA Certified Firearms Instructors will provide the NRA Basic Shotgun Shooting course.  The 10-hour course deals with the basic knowledge, skills, and attitudes necessary for safe and proper use of a shotgun in shooting a moving target. The fee covers the NRA "The Basics of Shotgun Shooting" textbook; NRA Safety Rules pamphlet; eye and ear protection (the students can keep the previous items); one-year membership to Southern Minnesota Sportsman's Club for student, spouse, and child under 18 years; lunch, coffee and rolls; firearms; ammunition; firearms cleaning supplies; and NRA Course Completion Certificate.  Follow-on and support is available after taking the course covering:

Shotgun Knowledge and Safe Gun Handling.  Identify principal parts of a shotgun, action types, and demonstrate the function.   NRA rules for safe gun handling will be explained, applied and adopted through the class for future use when around or using shotguns.   Demonstrate the handling of shotguns in a safe manner.

Ammunition Knowledge and Fundamentals of Shotgun Shooting.   Identify ammunition components and their function.  Identify the proper ammunition and its intended use.  Identify and demonstrate the five fundamentals of shooting a shotgun.

Firing the First Shots.  The knowledge, skills and attitude necessary to safely shoot a shotgun on the range.  Shoot a moving target using the five fundamentals of shotgun shooting.  Identify the materials needed to clean a shotgun.  Safely cleaning a shotgun will be demonstrated.

Shotgun and Shooting Skills Practical Exercise.  Demonstrate a knowledge of the NRA Shotgun Qualification Program.  Demonstrate progress in refining basic shotgun shooting skills and earning the Pro-Marksman Award.

Shotgun Games and Activities.  Identify several ways to pursue shotgun shooting activities after the course.  Identify criteria for selecting a shotgun.  Identify various shooting organizations and how to become involved with them.  Successfully pass the NRA Basic Shotgun Shooting Course Examination.  Safely pursue and enjoy shotgun shooting activities to the best of their ability.
